Reflections on Passover and Israel Today
Recognizing that our country was founded on Judeo-Christian values, I want to focus this week’s message on Passover. This year Passover begins tomorrow, Monday, April 22 and ends on April 30. It commemorates God’s covenant with the Jewish people. The Passover story from the Biblical book of Exodus conveys the historical enslavement of the Hebrew people in Egypt and how they were eventually freed. A decree came out from the new Pharaoh that all Hebrew newborn males were to be drowned in the Nile River. One mother wisely floated her newborn son down the Nile, thus leaving his future in the hands of God. This infant male was found and saved by the Pharaoh’s wife, and she named him Moses.
Moses reached adulthood and was instructed by God to command Pharaoh to release the Hebrews from their life of slavery. When Pharaoh resisted, God delivered ten plagues upon the Egyptian people. The final blow to the Egyptians came when God passed through the land of Egypt and slayed all the first-born males, including Pharaoh’s son. The Hebrews had been warned by God to mark their doors with the blood of a sacrificed lamb. God passed over the marked homes and their firstborn males were saved. It was then that Moses left Egypt with the huge population of Hebrews and made his way back to Canaan. This event is celebrated as Passover. It commemorates the liberation of the Hebrews from slavery in Egypt, marking the birth of the Jewish nation, Israel. It is one of the most significant Jewish holidays and is observed through a series of unique rituals and customs, including the removal from the home of chametz, (leavened products) the substitution of matzo, the seder feast, and the retelling of the Exodus story.
The seder at Passover is a gathering that celebrates the intervention of God who ensured that the Hebrews could return to their homeland and thrive. During the Passover seder, the seder plate sits in the middle of the table. The plate has various foods that symbolize the story of the Hebrews’ release from bondage.
Today, Israel finds itself once more being attacked by its enemies but now from four sides. Iran is the state sponsor of all this terrorism and has finally shown its hand by attacking Israel last week. But Israel is fighting back, showing its strength, ability, and determination to defeat its enemies. Our president and his feckless state department try to play both sides. They are too cowardly to stand unequivocally with Israel, our one true ally in the Middle East, and the only Biblical nation with which we share our nation’s roots. We are a Judeo-Christian country. Christianity would not exist if Israel did not exist. We are brothers and sisters unified by our belief in the one true God. Yet now we see protests in America’s cities against Israel. The chants of “from the river to the sea” are a demand by Palestinian extremists to destroy Israel. It is time to contact our representatives in Congress and let them know that we stand unequivocally with Israel. Our voices should be louder than the opposition! I believe that God is on Israel’s side once again and HE is the most important power of all!
May all of our Jewish members and friends enjoy a peaceful and reflective Passover.
Shalom- Patricia Moore
